Our Stories | Mexicali Blues Blog

Today brings a New Moon and Solar Eclipse in Capricorn, calling us to build new beginnings and create practical goals. Capricorn energy is clear and focused, and invites us to make realistic plans for what we want to manifest in the coming year. The sun and moon are conjunct Jupiter––the planet of abundance and luck––bringing opportunities, optimism, and good fortune your way.
To follow those Jupiterian good vibes and get aligned on your right path, think about what makes you feel optimistic and free AND ALSO where these things overlap with your natural skills. Saturn-ruled Capricorn shows us our limitations, which sounds like a total drag, but recognizing and accepting our limits can actually free us. When we’re dreaming not of some Pinterest-perfect version of our lives, but fully focused on the unique things that light us up, we can be real about who we are, where we are, and where we want to go.
If we’ve been holding on to something that isn’t totally right for us, it is likely to end now in order for something better to begin. This is an ideal time to make a fresh start and to question old habits, as we lay down an intentional foundation for growth and progress. Personal evolution is coming, whether you’re ready or not, so look forward with anticipation and be clear about what you want. <3

Lapis Lazuli jewelry at Mexicali Blues

Lapis lazuli is considered to be the stone of universal truth and friendship. It is reputed to bring harmony to relationships and help the wearer express the self in an authentic manner. Lapis is also considered a strengthening stone, bringing mental clarity and emotional healing.

In ancient Egypt, Lapis was the exclusive power stone of Queen Cleopatra. Believing it had magical properties, she had entire walls of her palace inlaid with it, and even had it ground into powder for her eyeliner. Still often referred to as the “Queen’s stone”, lapis brings luck, fortune, and a regal air to the bearer.

Lapis opens the door to self acceptance, which leads to serenity. It reveals inner truth, promoting self-awareness and the acceptance of that knowledge. It provides for the relief of things that may have been suppressed and allows for them to surface, helping to diminish dis-ease or repressed anger, and allows for self-expression without holding back or compromising.

Lapis promotes and protects interpersonal harmony in relationships, and helps to keep the head and heart in balance. Known as a protector of interpersonal relationships, this stone can help to heal broken or injured bonds. It can support being more comfortable and honest with your feelings, and enhance loving communication. It facilitates self-knowledge and self-expression, as well as inner piece. Ancient folklore says that if you give lapis lazuli as a gift, you are forging an eternal bond of friendship, loyalty, and trust between the two of you.

The beautiful blues in paintings from the Renaissance are thanks to the blue of lapis lazuli. The opaque blue gem material was the secret ingredient in ultramarine, the valuable pigment that all the old masters used to capture the rich blues of the sea and sky and the robes of the Virgin Mary. The color wasn’t duplicated by any other substance until 1834 but even now, some argue there is no substitute: unlike other pigments, centuries-old ultramarine still glows with rich color today.

Happy Full Moon in Gemini! The last full moon of the decade (!), this lunation is also the last full moon before we enter eclipse season, with a solar eclipse coming on December 26th. With eclipses propelling us powerfully into the future, now is the time to finalize and make our peace with what has come to and through our lives during the last six months.

A triple conjunction of Pluto, Venus, and Saturn means challenges regarding love and/or money are likely reaching a critical point. Venus brings love and money to the forefront, Saturn presents us with restrictions, and Pluto touches on deep fears and brings the crisis we may need to evolve. We are reaching a tipping point. The moon in quincux to this planetary trifecta insists that we make changes in our lives in order to restore equilibrium.

We will be forced to concentrate our attention on efforts on what isn't working well for us, and we need to be willing to let go. If we cling to what isn't best for us, we will likely experience loss, hardship, or disappointment, as the universe tries to show us that we need to release. If we are willing to shift, change, and take intentional steps towards the future we know we want, things around us will flow better. It will be apparent if you're on the right path; things will just go more smoothly. If you're experiencing a lot of stops and starts, troubles, and disappointment, be willing to question what old habits or stories may be influencing you.

Gemini is ruled by Mercury, the planet of communication, and we are invited to get the most out of this full moon in Gemini by writing, speaking, and using our words to investigate the past, explore the present, and set intention for the future. Activities that could give you a lot of support and growth right now would be things like creating new affirmations, journaling about the common stories in your life and how they shape your reality, meditating on and then writing down your most heart-held beliefs and planning how you might more clearly speak your truth. <3

Happy New Moon! With the moon in expansive Sagittarius, we are feeling pulled toward adventure and liberation. Mercury just went direct, and Neptune will do the same tomorrow (the 27th), and the feeling that gears are turning and things are moving forward is palpable and oh-so-compelling.
With Mars (the planet of action) in opposition to Uranus (the planet of upheaval), we may find ourselves feeling aggressive, frustrated, and impulsive--electrified with the energy to make a change right NOW. Once we know what we want, we may feel compelled to blow up everything around us to hasten its arrival--but we have to temper that impulse. The step this lunation is asking us to take now, although we want to leap in and just GET MOVING, is to let go of whatever past things are holding us back. We can feel that things are beginning to shift and we want BIG CHANGE, but we aren't actually there yet.
This is the last New Moon before we enter eclipse season, which will be a time of huge transformation. That next New Moon in Capricorn will call on us to build on the foundation we have to make long-lasting and stable strides, and now is the time to dream the beautiful dreams that we will build upon and towards. We are invited to listen to the voice that is impatient and hungry for action, and examine what it's saying and why before we heed it. We find ourselves pulled towards something: what is it we are really craving? Venus moving into Capricorn tells us to ask ourselves what we want to commit to. What fills our hearts with love and harmony and beauty? What are we frustrated about not achieving, and why did we want it? What have we been seeking? What used to matter to us that we can make peace with releasing?
Sagittarius is the philosopher-poet of the zodiac, and we may find that through conversation or writing we are able to clearly unveil the essence of something through our words. Expressing our thoughts of intention outwardly (even as we question them) will help us to define them.
It is time to trust your intuition and find your self-confidence, have faith in the unknown, and turn towards what is easeful, joyous, and free. A much more exciting life path than you had expected is about to be revealed; open your heart towards it and trust that when you leap towards what you love, you'll grow wings in the air. <3

While traveling through Northern Thailand in 2002, two women, Jane McBride and Patricia Zinkowski, discovered fifteen girls living in an abandoned school in the village of Doi Luang. The girls had little adult supervision and were trying to survive as best they could in an area known for human trafficking agents. Pattie visited us at Mexicali Blues recently to share the whole story of how this chance meeting led to the creation of Friends of Thai Daughters: an awesome organization dedicated to protecting girls who were trafficked or who, due to poverty or social status, are most vulnerable to trafficking, by offering them a safe living environment and an education.

These girls come from the hill tribes of Northern Thailand and are typically ages 8 to 23, without documentation or citizenship, orphaned, and/or victims of abuse. The shelter, support, and skills they receive from Friends of Thai Daughters can completely transform their lives.

These girls and young women live happily and healthily in a bright, cheerful safe house called “The Sunflower House.” Visiting the Sunflower House and seeing these wonderful young ladies grow and flourish over the years is one of the things we most love to do when we visit Thailand! Not only are we grateful to know these incredibly vibrant young people, but we are honored to continue to support their well-being.

In fact, if you have ever shopped at Mexicali Blues, YOU have contributed to creating a safe and healthy environment for these and other young girls in Thailand who would otherwise be at high risk for human trafficking. With 1% of all purchases going back to programs like Friends of Thai Daughters, your contribution is essential to our philanthropic endeavors. . . so, THANK YOU! (Learn about other organizations we support here)

At Mexicali we strongly believe that we all need to be aware how our choices as consumers can contribute to a shameful world problem and use our purchasing power—and philanthropy—to prevent it!

You can learn more about Friends of Thai Daughters and their fight against human trafficking in Thailand on their website  and on their Facebook page
