"Mexicali Blues has always been dedicated to doing the right thing, and having fun while doing it"
- Pete Erskine, Founder & Co-owner
We're all in this together
B Corp Certification not only holds us accountable for "doing the right thing" but challenges us to continuously improve upon our impact. We invite all of you, our stakeholders, to join the B Corp Global Movement and together we can chart a course towards a more sustainable future. Hopefully, we can continue to have fun while doing it.
“In a sea of greenwashing and virtue signaling, B Corp certification is a way for businesses and conscious consumers to rise above and set sail towards a more sustainable future.”
Chauncey Erskine, Stakeholder
What is a "B Corp"?
Certified B Corporations, B Corps for short, are companies dedicated to using business as a force for good. B Corporations are legally required to consider the impact of their decisions on all stakeholders: artisans, employees, communities, customers, and the environment. Mexicali Blues is proud to join the B Corp Movement alongside more than 8,200 like-minded businesses around the world, as well as over 20 B Corps here in Maine.
What does this mean?
The result are business decisions that take into consideration impact to all stakeholders, such as the environment and communities affected by business, in addition to human beings. The first step is to identify stakeholders, the next step is to make progressive decisions and policy changes that benefit all of them.
Who are Mexicali Blues stakeholders?
These are all of the people, places, and things affected by our business, and guess what... If you're reading this YOU are a stakeholder. So are:
- Our customers (whether in-store, online, or aspiring)
- Our employees (past, present, and future)
- The communities affected by our business (from Bangor to Bangkok)
- The beautiful planet that we all share (we prefer to keep it that way)
How does a business become B Corp Certified?
The B Corp certification process is undertaken by B Lab™ and verified by third-party analysts all over the world. Each business has to pass the rigorous B Impact Assessment (BIA) which is comprised of 250 questions broken down into five "Impact Pillars": Community, Customers, Environment, Governance, & Workers. In order to pass a company must score an 80 or higher.
Mexicali Blues scored 95.9
(For reference, the minimum score needed to achieve certification is 80, and the median score for an "ordinary" business is 50.9)
What's next for Mexicali?
While our B Corp Certification is a cause for celebration, this is just the start. This certification lasts for three years and Mexicali Blues plans to use that time to continuously improve its impact. Follow along to see what our shared future holds. With your help, and the momentum being generated by the B Corp Movement, we believe that we can truly use business as a force for good in this world. Why? Because we can always do better, and the world deserves more.
"Achieving B-Corp certification is a testament to the dedication and values that define Mexicali Blues. This milestone reflects our unwavering commitment to ethical sourcing, making environmentally responsible decisions, and staying community-focused—both locally and globally. It's a proud moment for our entire team and a clear indication of how we’ve evolved as a business, as we continue to challenge ourselves to prioritize doing good in every aspect of our work."
