“I GET TO MAKE SOMEONE’S DAY EVERY SINGLE DAY!” MARIA NAYLOR SHARES THE JOY OF A WHOLE MONTH OF MEXICALI MOMENTS
Do you ever wonder who you’re talking to when you call Mexicali customer service? More often than not, it’s probably Maria! Read on to learn more about her, and how she’s about to “make someone’s day every single day” with a whole month of #MexicaliMoments!
Maria Naylor started working at Mexicali Blues in 2015 as a part-time member of the floor team at our flagship store in Newcastle. “I was super-shy,” she remembers. “The whole idea of walking up and greeting every single customer who walked through the doors was agonizing. I mean, I could barely talk to people I already knew!” She just wasn’t sure she could do it.
“I was so nervous, but Mexicali Blues customers coaxed me out of my shell,” she says. “Everyone who came in to shop was so nice. Slowly but surely, all those ecstatic smiles from customers gave me confidence. It feels so natural now to talk to strangers! I developed real relationships with shoppers. I learned their names, and they learned mine … and by the time of my first performance review I had learned something new about myself—my shift supervisor told me that I’m actually really good at customer service!”
Maria’s store manager noticed, too. Her hours were increased and she was given more responsibilities. She was promoted to shift leader and she became a key holder, able to open or close the store. “As my skills and self-assurance grew over the summer, Mexicali Blues made sure that my job grew with me,” she says. “And last October, when a customer service position opened up at headquarters, my supervisor recommended me!”
With the launch of our redesigned website, online orders were up and growing fast. Mexicali needed a skilled employee dedicated to handling online customer service inquiries. Maria transferred down the road to our Newcastle Headquarters and began answering customer phone calls, responding to detailed customer questions about our wonderful products and resolving any problems or frustrations. She’s on the front lines of customer care and she is always ready to lend a helping hand. And not just for online customers! Maria is known throughout the office for her willingness to tackle any task that needs doing for anyone who needs an extra pair of hands. “Web order fulfillment, bookkeeping … I’ve done it all! I have the time, I have the energy, and I love to help,” she explains.
In fact, the variety of her job is one of the things Maria loves most about it. “There’s never a dull day at Mexicali,” she says with a laugh. And when she goes home? “I’m in my fuzzy socks with popcorn, a movie and my boyfriend,” she admits. “I’ve learned to be more outgoing at work, but I’m still a homebody at heart.”
She has also developed a passion for one Mexicali Blues product in particular—our handcrafted jewelry. “I’ve never really been into accessories,” she admits. “But the first summer I started working at Mexicali Blues, I rewarded myself with a sterling silver ring and pendant, and it sent me on a spiral! Now that I’m so close to the warehouse I’m one of the first employees to see new jewelry pieces come in. I’m obsessed with the gemstones—there’s always something glittering and gorgeous at every price point.”
The very best thing about Maria’s job, however, is her role in the Mexicali Blues Gratitude Giveaway. One of the fantastic features of our fabulous website is the ability to create personalized wish lists to keep track of all the beautiful boho goodness you are planning to buy. Starting last year, we began surprising one lucky customer per day by giving them one item from their wish list—absolutely free! All through the month of December, the Mexicali team has a ton of fun on Facebook Live revealing the day’s luckiest member of the Mexicali Tribe. And then, when the public announcement has been made, Maria takes over.
“I’m the person who gets to personally call the winner to let them know that they’ve won the Gratitude Giveaway for that day!” she says, bubbling over with excitement. “I get to make one person’s day, every single day, during the holiday shopping season. It’s an entire month of Mexicali Moments, and it’s magical for the winners and for me.”
As you might expect, everyone is happy to hear that they’ve won. “One winner told me that she had been having the worst day. It was just a few days before Christmas. She had placed an item her son wanted on her wishlist, something she really wanted to give him, and that was the item we were calling to give her! I could hear how close she was to tears—she was so happy and so grateful, she told me it made her whole week.” Despite the late date, Maria made it her top priority to get that gift delivered before Christmas so that it could be wrapped and under the tree.
And while the Gratitude Giveaway is the highlight of her year, Maria gets to make Mexicali Moments year-round. “If you win one of the summer concert ticket giveaways, I’m the one who gets to email or call you to let you know that FREE live music is coming your way,” she adds, beaming. “It’s the best when someone has tried to buy tickets and they were sold out, or they couldn’t afford to go, and I call to tell them to get ready to groove! No matter what, everyone is always so ecstatic, so grateful … it’s such a small gesture but it makes all the difference to them.” Maria’s #MexicaliMoment is made up of many moments shared with customers each day.
