Our traditional Mala prayer beads have 108 beads strung on nylon twine. Mala beads are used for counting all types of mantras, prayer, and meditations. When not in use, these beads are traditionally worn around the left wrist as a reminder to enrich the mind. The tassel marks the middle of the beads for counting. Bead types: Yak Bone - used in practice because the more that death is contemplated the more meaningful life becomes. Yaks are an important animal in Tibet, and to honor their passing their bones are used so that the animal is continuing to be of service as they pass from this consciousness to another. Lotus Seed - symbolizes spiritual knowledge and power. The lotus flower grows in the mud and blossoms into a beautiful flower, never getting wet by the water. This type of mala bead in particular helps us to be mindful of our spiritual selves and walk through life unencumbered by the trappings of the material world. Rudraksha Seed - brings peace of mind, protects against evil, and brings prosperity. Buddha, the Dalai Lama and Gandhi all wore Rudraksha beads. The beads have electro-magnetic properties similar to magnets. Rosewood - associated with the heart chakra, traditionally used for nervous tension, headaches, skin inflammations, and is especially effective in spiritual healing. Sandalwood - expect your sandalwood mala to have a soothing fragrance. Sandalwood attracts positive energy and clear perception, and acts as an antidepressant, antiseptic and assists the immune system.

PLACE: Nepal

We travel the world to source unique and handmade items. In Nepal, that means trekking across breathtaking mountain vistas, strolling with Tibetan Buddhist monks and sharing meals—and stories—in the warm and welcoming homes of our Nepalese friends. As we fill our stores with goods from Nepal, Nepal fills our spirits.

PURPOSE

Over the past two years, we've donated over $50,000 (all thanks to our customers!) to the dZi Foundation in order to help build earthquake-proof schools in remote Nepal.

PROCESS

Pete is proud of never bargaining the price he is given and always paying artisans for their skill and hard work. We see for ourselves how our goods are made and we work with the people who make them to keep items affordable and workshop wages fair.

PEOPLE

We forge long-term and mutually beneficial relationships with the artisans who handcraft our products. Pete and Kim have known many of our vendors for over a decade! Buying trips to workshops are chances to catch up with old friends and make new memories.
