All Mexicali Blues batik items are handmade in Bali, Indonesia, by artisans who have learned this ancient traditional art as it has been passed down through the generations. Each hand-batiked piece of fabric is created by blocking out selected areas of the cloth by brushing or stamping hot wax over it, and then dyeing the cloth. The parts covered in wax resist the dye and remain the original color. Often, the fabric is dyed once before it is batiked, allowing a complimentary color to show through the stamped or stenciled pattern. We just love the way this process makes every Balinese batik item we sell a one-of-a-kind work of art!

PLACE: Bali, Indonesia

We travel the world to source unique and handmade items. In Bali, that journey feels magical—through forested volcanic mountains, across beautiful beaches and reefs, to stunning terraced rice fields, and through an amazing array of immersive experiences—festivals! dances! parades!—in an incredibly warm and welcoming community.

Pete is proud of never bargaining the price he is given and always paying artisans for their skill and hard work. We see for ourselves how our goods are made and we work with the people who make them to keep items affordable and workshop wages fair.

We forge long-term and mutually beneficial relationships with the artisans who handcraft our products. Pete and Kim have known many of our vendors for over a decade! Buying trips to workshops are chances to catch up with old friends and make new memories.

Mexicali Blues donates 1% of sales to organizations. The dollars you spend on handmade goods from Bali do a world of good here and in Indonesia.
