May 22: ASTROLOGY + ENERGY: New Moon in Gemini

May 22: ASTROLOGY + ENERGY: New Moon in Gemini

The new moon of May rises in Gemini and is trine Saturn this year. It brings a new beginning and a period of restructuring, building and growth. If there are loose ends to tie up, the energy is right for it in this lunar cycle. Before you get too far into rebuilding, make sure you have a solid plan and your tools in place. With Saturn in the picture, there’s an added aura of responsibility that can help advance your goals.

Intense and transient energies are in the air leading up to the new moon so we suggest you pause before reacting to inflammatory situations. Study your behavior and recognize where your feelings are coming from. This will help balance your more wild tendencies, something air signs can all appreciate.

Gemini has an abundant amount of jittery energy that compels people to socialize and break outside of their comfort bubble. Luckily we have some stabilizing energy from a trine with Saturn which is keeping us grounded. That free-spirit summer attitude we all usually feel around this time of year is going to be calmed by our friend Saturn, who has more pragmatic and patient tendencies. Saturn will help us contain our extravagant feelings or ideas and impulses to help us make a goal plan.

Mars is included in this trine and gives us the motivation to follow through with our goals. In terms of our relationships, Mars can also provide inflammatory energy that can wreak havoc if not monitored closely. Breathe before you respond to triggering questions or proposals. If you find yourself running hot, step back and cool down before engaging further.

With Venus retrograde in Gemini (ruled by Mercury) we urge you to be cautious and look closely into your desires. Find what you love and follow a plan to educate yourself on how to bring more of that wholesome energy into your life. Learning is supported during this new moon but there is danger in the cosmos with Neptune closely involved. Neptune’s ever-changing and tumultuous energy will have us questioning the information at hand, which can distract us from the truth and further disengage us from our determined path.

      Coming up:

We have a full moon lunar eclipse in Sagittarius on June 5th! Check back in to see what that means and know which planets are going retrograde.

Introducing The Magical Mexicali Community Garden

Introducing The Magical Mexicali Community Garden

Under the light of April’s super moon was an auspicious setting for the groundbreaking of the Mexicali Blues Community Garden. The dream was hatched up a number of moonrises ago in the Mexicali warehouse, initially inspired by the green thumbs of our talented staff who proudly care for and display an exotic assortment of flora throughout the offices and workspaces.

The plants of Mexicali Blues lead luxurious lives presided over by figures of Buddha and Ganesha, serenaded by great tunes and alimented by love, light, and fresh river air. With the health and happiness of this groovy greenery in mind, a seed was sown. We thought, why not create a collective celebration of community and cultivation and share seeds, stories and inspiration in the sunshine with our Mexicali staff? It could become a space where we could eat lunch together, play frisbee, plant seeds and sing songs. This seed was germinated amongst the vibrant products and colorful characters of Mexicali, and in due time it was to be planted in the earth.

The first step was to find the perfect location for a garden, and what better choice than on the Mexicali grounds looking out over the beautiful Damariscotta River? Keith, our web wizard, was gracious enough to offer up his adjacent yard as a site and, albeit in the chilliness of early Maine spring, the idea, the seed, started to sprout. Keith also happens to come from a long line of horse handlers, and donated mature local fertilizer from his family farm.  A few days later we found ourselves in the garden unloading a truckload of organic gold, removing square foot plots of sod, and establishing the framework for what was to come. We couldn’t think of a better time to start a labor of love than under the light of a rising super moon, especially when Venus was squared up with Mars.

Our sweet little seedlings getting ready to be planted in the community garden!

Two days later Maine offered us one of its famous surprises in the form of and April snow shower and the newly turned garden was obscured by seemingly never ending white sheets for the following few days. This was an opportune time to sow seeds in the comfort of our own homes and get some seedlings ready to transplant into the Mexicali garden come May. We’re excited to see what additions are brought to the proverbial table and hope for a cornucopia come harvest time!

What do you think we should plant in the Mexicali garden? Leave any tips for community gardening on our facebook page!

Rising on the ninth of this month, the Full Moon of February is also known as the Snow, Storm, or Hunger Moon. Up here in Maine that will make sense to a lot of us but these names go back further than we may realize.

The Native Americans of the North East referred to it by these names because of the harsh winters Maine is known for. Those storms would make it more difficult to hunt or gather food, thus naming it the Hunger Moon. It's no wonder we stock up our pantries before each storm. The timing of our recent and long awaited snow squall definitely has us looking at our star charts.

The Moon will be in Leo for the weekend and will provide ample energy and light, making it a great time act on instinct. But we warn you to be safe and take caution. There's an air of drama that tags along with this lunar phase which can lead to conflict. Use this energy as a catalyst to jump into new activities!

With Venus rising in Pisces it is a good time to nourish your relationships. If there is tension now is the time to address it in a respectful and nurturing manner. The goal is to seek harmony and balance.

Here's what every sign needs to know for this month's Snow Moon:

Aries- Venus is in your sign! Look for new relationships or take extra time to put extra love and attention into one you have. Don't be afraid to open up and jump in.

Taurus- Be adventurous! Whether it’s in love or if you’re looking at a list of goals you haven’t acted on yet. This is YOUR time!

Gemini- Recognition is coming for you! It’s clear that you’ve been working hard but don’t let it get to your head. Take time to settle in to your new routine and don’t splurge with your sudden success.

Cancer- Take this opportunity to change things up! Don’t let yourself get stuck in the same routine you’ve been in. It’s important to be in control of what YOU want.

Leo- If anyone can find guidance this month it’s you. Let the lunar energy guide you- listen to yourself and trust your instincts.

Virgo- Break down those rigid walls and introduce new healthy habits! Change your workout routine or start that drawing class you’ve been wanting to try.

Libra- Communication is key. Take those feelings of gratitude for your loved ones and let them know. This will help you feel more connected, even if there is distance.

Scorpio- It’s time for hygge! Be comfortable and use this energy and power to accomplish your goals.

Sagittarius- Does it feel like everything is in place? Use this to boost your confidence and take on a new opportunity.

Capricorn- Your strong-headedness is definitely at the forefront and the energy might even feel overwhelming. Roll with it but be cautious of how you affect others.

Aquarius- Don’t hold back because this is your time for fulfillment in your relationships. Find a friend in Leo- they will help you.

Pisces- Don’t get carried away. Your season is almost here and that’s giving you an electric energy source. Use it wisely and invest in yourself and experiences over possessions.

Eclipse season begins today with a New Moon and partial solar eclipse in Cancer! This eclipse is the first of three this summer, with the following two coming July 27th and August 11th. Solar eclipses are always a time of change, shaking and waking up parts of your life that have been stagnant, whether you’re ready and expecting it or not! These powerful lunations will all be dancing on the axis of Cancer-Capricorn, drawing our attention to issues like: dependency vs. self-sufficiency, emotion vs. reality, comfort vs. responsibility, or mother vs. father. Maybe it brings up issues with our own parents, or the way we self-parent ourselves as adults.

Cancer (ruled by the beautiful and benevolent Moon) represents the mothering, nurturing side of our personalities, while Capricorn (ruled by stern and strict Saturn) represents the fathering, disciplining side. Cancer values emotional safety and comfort above all else, doing whatever it takes to make us feel OK, often using patterns and behaviors that have worked in the past to relieve emotional discomfort. Capricorn values self-sufficiency more than vulnerability, and would rather show us how to be stronger and more skilled in order to take better care of ourselves in the future. These two contrasting approaches compliment one another when in balance, but it’s very hard to be completely balanced where emotion vs. pragmatism is concerned! The best we can do, at this juncture, is to try to treat ourselves lovingly while keeping the bigger picture in mind—recognizing that there can be no true nurturing without discipline, and that our goals and ambitions do also need to be tempered with self-care.

At this New Moon, we are guided to a rebirth of some kind. We are asked to honor the changes that have taken place within us over the past few years of cosmic and earthly upheaval, and to reassess who we are now and what we truly want for our lives at this point. Is it time to stop walking a path that we’ve been on for a long time that no longer serves us? Is it time to release habits that once brought us comfort but have outlived their usefulness? If you've been neglecting an aspect of your life, you can expect it to come to the surface during this eclipse cycle. . . so whatever pops up, you're being called to consider it in this context. As this is just the first of the Cancer Eclipses, the energy and exploration that we begin to experience now is going to continue to grow and develop over the next couple of months, leading us to reach new heights and learn new things. Just as the crab outgrows its shell, we, too, are in the process of shedding an old way of being and stepping forward into a more mindful, healthy, and positive future.

June 28th is a Full Moon in Capricorn!  Nobody will ever tell you that Capricorn’s forté is feelings, and this Saturn-ruled sign is the zodiac’s task-master, pushing us to ground and actualize our ideas by focusing attention and taking concrete steps toward our goals.  With its ruling planet in retrograde right next to this Full Moon, the Saturnian vibes that challenge us to take responsibility for ourselves and our actions (or lack of actions) are extra strong. It is possible that during the next couple of weeks, we will be feeling more serious, fearful, guilty, or restricted than usual. Saturn is a stern teacher who imposes rules and limits to get us on a positive track, which is ultimately helpful but really not any fun.  In Greek mythology, Saturn was also known as Cronus, the god of time and “devourer of freedom”.  We may find ourselves particularly struggling with time, having trouble using it the way we want, not being late to appointments, etc.  We are invited right now to ask ourselves what we are doing to move us toward the things we want, and to look at the ways we avoid responsibility.  If we’re not big on self-enquiry, we may find that we are called out on these things by someone else!

Whether we come to recognition on our own or through external feedback, this lunation offers a powerful opportunity to witness ourselves and our situations clearly and unemotionally, to take logical stock of what we're working with, what can help us grow, and what is best left behind. A harmonious aspect with Uranus (the planet of upheaval and swift change) brings chance encounters and opportunities to break free of restrictions or behaviors that we can witness now as unhealthy/unhelpful, though this energy is not as strong as the Saturn+Capricorn Moon enforcer vibes.  It will likely be very difficult to jump on an impulsive Uranian lightning bolt and zoom away, but it isn't impossible. If you can go for it, it might end up turning everything upside-down in a really awesome way!

Contributing to the difficulty of following a potentially disruptive impulse is that Capricorn/Saturn can make us feel extra cautious as we resonate with all of the logistics and possible pitfalls.  If we're not feeling ready to move on something just yet, this is still a beautiful and powerful time to devote attention to planning. You'll find it easier than usual to break a big idea down step-by-step, and find your way to recognizing all the unglamorous but important daily tasks that it requires to get you where you want to go.  Try brainstorming on paper in an organized way; charts and tables can be your friends right now.  Make it less austere of a project by burning some magical incense while you write, listening to groovy wordless tunes, and using colored pens or pencils!  Do whatever you need to, to remind yourself--even if this part is tedious and kind of dull--that this is ultimately in service of aiming the arrow of your life where your heart really wants to go! <3
